Indian Railways’ new Rules from July 1, 2025

Here are the important changes passengers can expect from indian railways, starting from July 1, 2025:

1. AC Waiting List

AC Waiting list cap has been increased from 25% to 60% of total births. This decision was taken to remove railway passengers inconvenience and address the underutilization of capacity, as reported by zonal railways.

2. Non-AC and Second Class Waiting List

For Non-AC sleepers and second-class coaches, the waiting list cap has been revised to 30% of total berth capacity. This revision in the cap will balance the demand and also ensure the availability of berths in these most occupied coaches.

3. Changes in Chart Preparation Timings

A significant change in chart preparation timings has been announced. Now, first reservation chart shall be now prepared 8 hours before departure instead of existing 4 hours. This change has already been piloted on select trains and is now being extended to all trains.

4. Aadhaar Mandatory for Tatkal Bookings

Starting from 01.07.2025, all tatkal bookings, online or at PRS counters, shall be made using an Aadhaar linked user ID and OTP sent to passenger’s Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers shall also be mandatory to complete the railway ticket booking.

5. Restriction for Agents for Tatkal Booking

Restriction has been imposed for Agents in Tatkal booking for the first 30 minutes after the ticket window opens each day, to reduce the bulk-booking and prioritize individual passengers. It’s a welcome move for the railway passengers.

6. Minor fare increase on Long Distance Trains

There is a nominal fare increase, the first since 2020. Fares for non-AC Mail/Express trains will rise by Rs. 0.01 per kilometer, while AC fares will increase by Rs. 0.02 per kilometer. Suburban fares, tickets under 500km in second class, and monthly season passes remain unchanged.

Conclusion

With these changes, the Railways aim to simplify bookings, ensuring greater access for individuals and moving towards a robust digital-first reservation system. All these changes will take effect from July 1, 2025.
